This course integrates current research on how the brain constructs memory to improve learning in students of all abilities. Teachers will be provided with evidence to support the practical teaching strategies presented as they delve into the areas of knowledge construction and retention using evidence from advances in neuroscience and psychology that support memory and learning. Teachers will be encouraged to incorporate memory work into their classroom practice but cautioned on appropriateness of use and also pointed towards research and resources that support problem solving and 21st century skills. In this course teachers will be guided towards an understanding of the brain and learning that avoids unnecessary dichotomies of pedagogy such as problem based learning versus direct instruction and encouraged to apply research behind both of these along with guided instruction in the context of their own class depending on their student’s needs. This course emphasises that no two students are the same and that teaching and learning must therefore be personalised to support the need of each student. A focus of this course is on memory work and how research into how the brain remembers and learns, can be used more effectively in teaching and learning across the curriculum.
