In this course teachers will investigate findings from research in affective neuroscience that show that emotion and cognition are not independent of one another, but rather that Emotional Thought is the intersection of emotion and cognition. Teachers will be given an introduction into affective neuroscience, and be encouraged to explore how knowledge of the relationship between cognition and emotion could positively impact their classroom practice. Teachers will explore ideas about survival instinct and critically reflect on research findings and their potential application to the classroom. Teachers will be introduced to ideas around emotions, decision making and creativity, and be encouraged to explore these topics further through the post course resources and discussion board. From the understanding gained in this course about the relationship between emotion and cognition, teachers will have the opportunity to implement teaching strategies based on knowledge of students’ physical, social and intellectual development and characteristics to improve student learning.
