This course links evidence-based research on survival instinct, attachment and how abuse and trauma affect the brain and learning with the everyday plight of children at risk in class. Teachers investigate current research findings in the areas of survival instinct, attachment and abuse and trauma, and have an opportunity to reflect on their own attachment styles to personalise the learning content and facilitate an empathetic response. Teachers then use this thinking to make an explicit link between the challenging behaviours of children at risk and the biological responses caused by abuse. Teachers will then collaborate with their colleagues in an online discussion board, and devise a practical behaviour intervention for use in their class based on the research they explored in this course.
