Teachers will learn about the scientific background behind how abuse and trauma can affect the brain, specifically the HPA-Axis. The course also provides teachers with plain-language insight into how abuse can cause difficulty for a child in their learning. Teachers will reflect on whether children who appear to be “difficult” actually might have learning difficulties as a result of trauma and abuse, and whether punishment for bad behaviour or differentiating the curriculum is more appropriate for these children. Collaborative opportunities for teachers to share ideas on how they have differentiated the curriculum for children at risk will be provided. Teachers will be encouraged to engage in continuous professional learning opportunities by returning to the course to reflect on the additional resources provided and how they have modified their teaching practice as a result of what they have learned from this course.
